The saying "age is just a number" seems to apply to soccer player Lionel Messi.
The 36-year-old Messi stated in a Big Time Podcast interview that was published on Wednesday that he doesn't think getting older is a big deal when it comes to calling it quits on his career.
In addition, he stated that he hasn't thought about ending his playing career, which has seen him win eight Ballon d'Or honors, ten La Liga crowns, four Champions League championships with Barcelona, and the World Cup with Argentina.
The player, who will turn 37 in June, admitted, "The truth is, I haven't thought about it yet." "I try to enjoy it day by day these days, to savor each moment without giving it any more thought."I would like to continue playing for a little longer, but I don't have anything concrete yet. When the time comes, I'll undoubtedly find a way to pursue anything that makes me happy and enjoyable perhaps a new role.”
These days, it's common for athletes to play into their late 30s and beyond. At 39 years old, Messi's longtime rival Cristiano Ronaldo is still active and a prolific goal scorer for the Portuguese and Saudi Arabian clubs Al-Nassr.
Messi became an Inter Miami player last year, and in August he won the Leagues Cup, the first-ever championship for his new team. After six games this season, the squad is presently ranked second in the Eastern Conference.
Messi responded, "The moment that I'm not at the level to deliver, that I'm not enjoying it, that I'm not helping my teammates," when asked what would influence his choice to retire. As I mentioned at the outset, I am a pretty critical person of myself. I'm aware of my strengths and weaknesses, when I play well and poorly, and when the time comes for me to go on, I will do it without regard to my age.
"I will always try to compete because it is what I like to do and what I know how to do if I feel good."
Due to a hamstring injury, Messi was unable to play in Argentina's most recent friendly against Costa Rica and El Savaldor. It's uncertain if he will participate in Saturday's MLS match between Inter Miami and New York City.
